Film block detailThe Situation / The SituationBritish-American Panorama Film description: The military operation in Iraq now influences the entire United States: politicians, journalists, documentarists, as well as voters. The Situation is the first American artistic expression of the war in Iraq through a feature-length film. When a group of American soldiers throw the body of an Iraqi boy off a bridge in Samara, a chain of events is triggered that reveal the deep animosity of the local inhabitants. Mutual disagreements amongst Iraqis lead to further violence between radicals and corrupted police. The film combines the elements of thriller, romance and war films, depicting the story of a journalist who decides to write a story based on an attempt on the life of an Iraqi leader she admired, despite her intimate relationship with a CIA agent. Director: Philip Haas Director annotation: He has extensive filmmaking experience. The first American film set in contemporary Iraq, The Situation, is his tenth feature-length film. He made his debut with the British film The World of Gilbert & George. His most famous film is Angels and Insects, starring Kristin Thomas, the opening night of which was held at Cannes. His successful works include also e.g. Music of The Chance. Philip Haas also made several documentary films.
