I Walk Because I'm Selfish

I walk because I want my mom to be around when I have kids and when my kids have kids.
I walk because my little sister might need a wig made out of my hair one day...
...and I might need one made out of hers.
I walk for everyone I've ever know who HASN'T had breast cancer...
...as well as the WONDERFUL people I've met whose lives HAVE been touched by breast cancer.
I walk because the prognosis of 1 in 6 scares me to death.
I walk for the generousity I've seen in others and hope to one day see in myself.
I walk because I enjoy it.
I walk because I can.
I walk for YOU.

My Mom is my #1 Fan!

A Little About Me...

As most of you know, this is mine and my husband's second time participating in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. We walked in 2006 and it was a very moving experience. We decided to take 2007 off because we got married in the beginning of the year and wanted to take a little time to get settled in. :o)
We got interested in the Avon Walk for a few different reasons; my mom was an Avon Rep. at the time, so she looked into it for us. A little more personally, about 4 years ago I had to have a biopsy to determine whether or not I had this disease. Thankfully, I don't. That experience made me realize that I have absolutely NO idea what someone who finds out that they do have breast cancer has to go through and that I defenitly wanted to do more to help.
Those are the reasons I walked in 2006; for myself and for everyone who's lives have been affected so much more deeply by breast cancer than mine has been. After participating in this event, I have a new reason for walking. I walk (among many many MANY other reasons) for anyone and EVERYONE that I've ever known who HASN'T had breast cancer. I know statistics aren't always 100% accurate but one thing that I've learned that I'll probably always remember is that 1 in 6 PEOPLE (that's MEN as well as WOMEN) will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives. Not to be overly depressing, but I know that we're all going to "go" from something one day, but considering the odds, it's a pretty scary thought! Hopefully if we keep working to raise money to develope new treatments and provide education about breast cancer those odds will be reduced and eventually dissappear completely.

My Wonderful Husband and Walking Partner!

2 Days, 39.3 Miles and $1,800 Later...

...A little about the Avon Walk.
I will be walking a total of 39.3 miles in 2 days. It might sound like a lot, but it's a pretty cool feeling when you hear yourself say "Oh, I only did a 9 mile practice walk this weekend..." and you're actually NOT trying to sound sarcastic... :o) In order to participate in the walk I'm required to raise a *minimum* of $1,800. One of the most difficult things about training is the fund raising, but it's also part of the experience that I wouldn't trade. It probably sounds cheesy, but one of the most moving parts of this experience that I've had is when a complete stranger comes up to us at a fund raiser and hands us $20. I REALLY really hope that one day I can find it in my heart to be that generous. Whether if their lives or the lives of someone they've known has been touched by breast cancer, or if it's just a part of who they are; THOSE people are MY inspiration.
Anyway, with that said...I could REALLY use YOUR help reaching my $1,800 fund raising goal. There is no donation amount too big or too small. I truely appreciate anything that you're able to donate to help me. There are 3 ways that you can make your donation: Click on the "Click Here to Support Me" tab to the right of the page and use a credit card, write a check payable to the "Avon Walk for Breast Cancer" and give it to me to mail in (we have to send in special donation "coupons" w/checks) or if you prefer to make a cash donation you can give that to me as well and I will post the donaion in your name on my site ASAP.
I really appreciate your support and any donation that you are able to make.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!
Love,
Holly

Thank You
Today is 3 more days 'til our walk and counting! Other than finding my pink pom-pom from 2 years ago to take w/me (and pack!) I'm all set! Fernando will just throw everything in a back pack Friday morning and be a happy camper. Ha ha. Well, a big HUGE HUMONGO thank you to everyone who supported us this past year. We very NEARLY reached our fund raising minimum, which is closer than I think we thought we'd be. We couldn't have done it w/out your support and donations. Fernando and I are SO excited about the walk this weekend and can't wait to send out pictures sometime next week of this very cool experience. Thank you thank you again and we look forward to doing it all over again in 2010!!!!

25 More Days
Less than a month away from our walk now and I am getting SO excited. I've been excited the whole time, but when the end of your fund raising is in sight that's when it gets really exciting. Ha ha. :o) I just finished my last work bake sale today. I only had a brownie and 2 bags of oatmeal raisin cookies left, so I'd call that a success. Now I have one more bake sale for my husband's cousin's work and a fund raiser at Joann's craft store this weekend and we will see where we stand.
On a side note, I want to thank Scott Taylor for his donation. My mom encouraged me to write to some of the people she knows through work and he was nice enough to make a donation. I really really appreciate that!
Well, enough for tonight. I hope to do another update soon after these next 2 fund raisers. Thanks again to everyone who's supporting us!

Thank You!
Over the weekend my husband and I held our second fund raiser. It was supposed to be the weekend before, but unfortunately it was VERY windy, so we had to postpone. This weekend was pretty chilly, but we had our hot chocolate, so we were set! I just wanted to give a HUGE thank you to all the customers (and employees) at Joann's that made this day successful for us. People like you are a HUGE part of why we're able to participate in this walk and without the generousity you've shown us we wouldn't be able to do it.
A very special THANK YOU to *Barb* *Natalie* *Marcie* *Leslie* *Mary* *Laura* *Pixie* and *Dylan*
Thank you again and just know that your contribution is truely appreciated!

About the Avon Foundation and the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer
The Avon Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity, was founded in 1955 to improve the lives of women and their families, and Avon philanthropic programs worldwide have raised and awarded more than $500 million. Now past the half century milestone, the Avon Foundation brings this mission to life through two key areas: breast cancer and domestic violence. The Avon Breast Cancer Crusade launched in 1992, and Avon breast cancer programs in some 50 countries support advancing access to care and finding a cure for breast cancer, with a focus on the medically underserved. Funding is awarded to beneficiaries ranging from leading cancer centers to community-based breast health programs for awareness and education; screening and diagnosis; access to treatment; support services; and scientific research.  Fundraising is through a variety of “pink ribbon” products, events, races and walks. The largest is the U.S. Avon Walk for Breast Cancer series, which began in 2003. For more information on the Avon Foundation visit http://www.avonfoundation.org/.
