Vote, ya bastards.

Alex in NYC, Monday, 6 August 2007 23:23 (sixteen years ago) link

1st album

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 6 August 2007 23:23 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't care if voting for Night Time makes me a populist know-nothing...it's my favorite.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 6 August 2007 23:23 (sixteen years ago) link

The first self-titled is probably the best, but I listen to Pandemonium the most, so my vote goes to that one.

Jeff Treppel, Monday, 6 August 2007 23:31 (sixteen years ago) link

_Killing Joke 2003_ draws me back time and again. It totally encapsulates my feelings as a liberal Democrat in America under Shrub.

Mr. Odd, Monday, 6 August 2007 23:33 (sixteen years ago) link

i wonder WHO is gonna vote for outside the gate -- you KNOW it's gonna happen in this place.

Eisbaer, Monday, 6 August 2007 23:40 (sixteen years ago) link

lest we forget why outside the gate is such a travesty, see the album cover below and weep:

Eisbaer, Monday, 6 August 2007 23:42 (sixteen years ago) link

I've never even heard _Outside The Gate_. I even like _Brighter Than A Thousand Suns_. Maybe I should sample OTG, just to see what's what?

Mr. Odd, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 00:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Whichever one has "Eighties" on it.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 00:09 (sixteen years ago) link

1. 1st album
2. 2nd album
3. 3rd album
4. Live Ha! EP which isn't even up there
5. Who cares

xhuxk, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 00:27 (sixteen years ago) link

It's not up there because it's a live album, Chuck -- we're talking studio output. The live albums will be a separate poll.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 00:52 (sixteen years ago) link

oh boy, i can't wait...

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 00:56 (sixteen years ago) link

I'll vote for What's THIS for.. just because it sounded like their second debut album. I vividly remember hearing the first two records for the first time. Very special moments in my musical upbringing. They never again came anywhere close to that in my opinion, but that's still twice more than almost every other band.

peepee, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 01:32 (sixteen years ago) link

I went for my sentimental favorite Extremities. Might not be their best, but it was the first I heard.

John Justen, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 01:36 (sixteen years ago) link

2003. I'm a sucker for the Post-Punkers' continuing competence. (Grinderman, Von Sudenfed, Read+Burn)

Debut - The version with "Change"

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 20:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Another populist vote for Night Time from me! The Joke on the pop charts, blowing my teenage mind. I used to look at the TV and go, 'My God, how cool is Geordie and how ugly is Jaz'.

moley, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 21:53 (sixteen years ago) link

What album is "A New Day" on? I guess I vote for the New Day 12".

Lie Bot, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 22:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Which album did Alex vote for?

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 22:43 (sixteen years ago) link

Debut - The version with "Change"

Wait ("Wait"), is there also a version of the debut without "Change"? Was that the original one? -- as in, was "Change" added after the original release, or what? (I also have a "Change"/"Requiem" 12-inch on my shelf somewhere, so it was obviously the single. Wasn't it a small hit at new wave dance clubs at the time?)

xhuxk, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 22:54 (sixteen years ago) link

Not on any album (although you can inexplicably find an extended mix of it on the odds n' sods collection, Wilfull Days. That said, it will probably be appended to the re-release of NightTime which is slated for later this year (after many delays).

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 23:20 (sixteen years ago) link

UK debut did not originally include "Change." US version did.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 23:24 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh...so hard for me...but, I'm going to go with the one that I've probably listened to the most out of them all, which is Night Time. However, the debut, What's THIS for...! and Revelations make a close second.

Aja, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 02:24 (sixteen years ago) link

2nd Pandemonium

rockapads, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 04:15 (sixteen years ago) link

I haven't heard all these, but I'm probably going to end up voting for Night Time. What's THIS For..! is tempting, though.

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 04:17 (sixteen years ago) link

(X) none of them

am0n, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 04:34 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh, you can't choose???

Or are you just stupid...

Aja, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 04:36 (sixteen years ago) link

first album!! love it so much i have the thing framed on my den wall.....even have a tshirt with the cover on it.

I went for my sentimental favorite Extremities. Might not be their best, but it was the first I heard.

and that makes two of us, for the same reason. i think there's a deluxe reissue coming soon on candlelight.

VERDAMMT BBCODE

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 06:04 (sixteen years ago) link

3rd album is the one. I was at a gig the other week to see some local 'rock band' they were competent but just basically pointless, I spent the time musing to myself that I should storm the stage armed with a set of powerpoint slides and do a presentation to the audience (and the band) about Killing Jokes 3rd.

Sandy Blair, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 07:05 (sixteen years ago) link

Coudn't bring yourself to add the semi-oblig "hate" option, even in irony?

Mark G, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 07:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Difficult to choose between the 1st 2... and the 3rd... no interest in the rest. I'll go with "What's THIS For...!"

Tom D., Wednesday, 8 August 2007 08:48 (sixteen years ago) link

This is true.

I'm just fucking with ya.

I don't see why you bother posting on this thread if you don't care for KJ. That's all.

Aja, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 16:25 (sixteen years ago) link

31st? that's ages away.

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 22:06 (sixteen years ago) link

I picked up Brighter Than a Thousand Suns for cheap, and I've been enjoying it. Doesn't sound at all like Killing Joke, but it's pretty cool mid 80s gothy synthpop.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 22:17 (sixteen years ago) link

what johnny fever said. i fuckin' love "night time".

but it was close between that and the first album.

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 22:22 (sixteen years ago) link

I won't lie -- I gave my vote to NightTime

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 02:17 (sixteen years ago) link

"I gave my vote to NightTime"

Hippie.

I mean it's a nice album, but it's not got the compelling creepy paranoia of the 1st album, the simmering barely controlled rage of the 2nd, or the, erm, simmering, slightly more controlled rage but with added creepy paranoia of the 3rd one.

Sandy Blair, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 07:28 (sixteen years ago) link

Night Time was the one that recruited me, so to speak.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 11:11 (sixteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 23:01 (sixteen years ago) link

What's to win then? 1st album or Night Time?

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 30 August 2007 00:27 (sixteen years ago) link

Pandemonium!

Jeff Treppel, Thursday, 30 August 2007 00:29 (sixteen years ago) link

Thought long and hard on this one - What's THIS for?! gets the most play for me so I'm going with that ... though I love the first and Brighter and the new stuff quite a bit too...

BlackIronPrison, Thursday, 30 August 2007 00:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Thursday, 30 August 2007 23:01 (sixteen years ago) link

1st 3 in my order of preference actually.

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 30 August 2007 23:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Only 9 votes for Night Time? Jesus H. what is WRONG, people?

Bimble, Friday, 31 August 2007 01:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Not enough goths on the board, obviously.

aldo, Friday, 31 August 2007 06:57 (sixteen years ago) link

I find that hard to believe!

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 31 August 2007 15:26 (sixteen years ago) link

Who the hell voted for Democracy??? I'm sorry, but that shouldn't be anyone's favorite Killing Joke!

Aja, Sunday, 2 September 2007 02:08 (sixteen years ago) link

MORE GOTHS ON THE BOARD! PRONTO!

Bimble, Sunday, 2 September 2007 05:17 (sixteen years ago) link

No surprises. Also, their 2003 album gets the credit it deserves, whatever Geordie's opinion of Dave Grohl's individually tracked drums.

moley, Sunday, 2 September 2007 05:59 (sixteen years ago) link

Only 4 votes for "Revelations"?

Weird.

PhilK, Sunday, 2 September 2007 09:17 (sixteen years ago) link

I was baffled by that too. I've heard the other early ones, but it was "Revelations" that always stuck with me.

Soukesian, Monday, 3 September 2007 21:41 (sixteen years ago) link

wtf Fire Dances gettin robbed

sleeve, Monday, 3 September 2007 22:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Soukesian - Yeah, "Revelations" and "What's THIS for....?" are IMMENSE, but I don't like the debut at all. Too soupy........

NIGHT TIME REISSUE I AM FOAMING AT THE MOUTH

Bimble, Sunday, 14 October 2007 21:48 (sixteen years ago) link

three years pass...

Yah, that early single box is off the charts good. That punk-reggae sound was imitated but no one else got the fusion as they did here. Wild to hear them revisit it on one track on their new album!
