Wyclef Responds To Sean Penn

Last night, Wyclef officially announced his plans to take the seat for the highest office in Haiti. Though many are in full support, others like actor Sean Penn questioned Clef’s motivation. In turn, the Presidential hopeful had this to say:

“I just want Sean Penn to fully understand I am a Haitian, born in Haiti and I’ve been coming to my country ever since (I was) a child. He might just want to pick up the phone and meet, so he fully understands the man.”

  1. Nathaniel says:

    sean penn?

    my nigga, you’re a jewish-italian white man. no matter how much so-called activism you do your opinion of a haitian man running for president of haiti is irrelevant. you have no stake or real interest invested in the country. whether it sinks or swims has nothing to do with you… you’re from los angeles, your parents were actors and actresses.

    the arrogance of some of these white people is beyond me. stay out of the affairs of dark nations. tf?

    and wyclef sitting down with penn is dumb. who gives a fuck that he’s suspicious? why should clef care? that’s right…. he shouldn’t

  2. Vexed and Glorious says:

    Negroe Please. If that ain’t a response full of nothing I don’t know what is. Just cause I’m black, born in American, and lived here all my life doesn’t necessarily make me qualified to be the President of the NAACP or the United States for that matter. Haven’t heard much of anything about his actual platform, other than the economic part which appears to want to have more American/global intervention. You are not the golden child and you definitely aren’t Obama. Go Sit Down and pay back all that missing/misused charity money while you’re at it.

  3. Vexed and Glorious says:

    @Nathaniel
    why do you have to make it a black or white issue? why not make it a whose actually been helping in Haiti during the post earthquake issue?

  4. DGtheEnigma says:

    Sean Penn’s opinion my not have weighted value, but that’s saying a lot if 1) he hasn’t been seen IN Haiti in the last six months — raising money in the US for Haiti is not the type of development Haiti needs. 2) That’s something that a guy who broke bread with Wyclef and knows him well is siding with the opposition.

    No disrespect to Wyclef cause he’s done some good work as an ambassador for Haiti, but I saw his announcement last night. He spoke in third person for damn near the entire interview and he was woefully unprepared.

    I know this makes for a good media story, but Haiti faces real issues, and the US media should be careful about how they report on the upcoming Haiti “election”.

  5. DGtheEnigma says:

    Wyclef’s brought a voice to the plight of Haiti, but that certainly doesn’t make him prepared to lead a country that is essentially rebuilding from scratch.

    Wyclef not living in Haiti is a problem. Even hip-hop blogs should be careful how they portray this.

    Looking at you RapRadar…as you know, this site has a lot of influence. Thanks for at least posting a story from an opposing view to balance out the “presidential look” of Wyclef last night. I was worried for a minute.

  6. xxxxxxxxxxxxxx says:

    Exactly.

    The nigga came off in his announcement as the same old rich dictator talking to all his poor “subjects”.. nigga shows up on a jet has a caravan of cars gets out looking arrogant and rich.. and then trying to act like “one of them” nigga you may be from Haiti but you can’t feel what them niggas is going through.

    Shit.. thats like Bill Gates trying join in on my friday poker game.. tryin to fit in.. lol

    nigga like.. Wyclef gonna do this.. Wyclef gonna do that.. nigga please.

    Sean Penn.. (a nigga I can’t stand based on policy) been one of the main niggas down there helping.. and SOMEONE needed to call Wyclef’s ass out..

    Nigga need to be answering about his corrupt ass charity and about his CURRENT tax lien in the UNITED STATES.. nigga can’t even keep his PERSONAL shit straight..

    git the fuck outta here..

  7. Thank Me Hater says:

    Sean Penn?! That shit came completely out of nowhere. Random as fuck. On another note what experience does Clef have?

  8. Nathaniel says:

    @Vexed and Glorious

    ^because in Haiti’s case, and every other dark nation that has been crippled by western(white) imperialism and greed, it IS a black/white issue. right now, and in the future, america and every other eurocentered nation will only have a stake in Haiti to the degree that they can turn it into a democracy, put schools up that teach a non-haitian centered education (brainwashing), and basically try to turn haiti into a satellite of america. only to the degree by which they can suck blood and enslave dark people are white nations interested in them. sean penn has been in haiti consistently since the earthquake, “helping” in the relief effort. help has to be defined. what haiti needs is nationalism and to be left alone by white nations. it’s not a white/black thing but you immediately too penn’s side and ran clef through the mud. if Penn doesn’t have a plan alternate to Clef, AND if you don’t, then both of you should be quiet.

    and for Clef. if he thinks the solution to Haiti’s problem is rallying the US to rebuild, he’s mistaken. you take any people from anywhere, if you leave them be, in freedom, they can rebuild themselves. the only source Haiti should trust for help are dark nations. as people of african descent, it is not unreasonable for me, or any of us, to take that stance. HISTORY WELL WARRANTS it. i’m not fool. peace

  9. Nathaniel says:

    and there is truth to what DGtheEnigma and xxxxxxxxxx said. straight up.

  10. Nathaniel says:

    “when we talk about job creation, we’re talking about the diaspora that gives to haiti $2 billion per year. that’s more money than the donors would give. what we need to do, is whatever jobs we’re creating, we need the diaspora outside of haiti to be a part of that. a lot of times we’re waiting to get help for haiti. but the true help we need is we have to galvanize our own people, starting with the diaspora outside of haiti” – WYCLEF

    ^that’s it right there. now, if he tries to turn haiti into little america he’ll fuck up royally. the diaspora is where it’s at. another thing that struck me was wolf blitzer questioning clef like he was running for america’s presidency, or like wolf actually knows enough about haiti to contest clef. what america will try to do is smear wyclef because they fear they can’t control him. the media will pick and pick at him o demagnetize him to black people here in america and in haiti. this would be a grave mistake by us. we need to rally behind our brother and help him, not dismiss him. he wont be perfect, but he needs support from his people here, and around the world. niggas in america ARE a part of the african diaspora too.

  11. Truth says:

    Nathaniel please go shoot yourself you dumb bastard. Atleast Sean Penn has been down there helping which is more than your stupid ass has done you racist fuck. Where do you think this 5 billion in pledges is coming from?……… The same white people who cut your check bitch

  12. freakshow says:

    Can I ask everyone a question? Prior to the earthquakes in Haiti, was Sean Penn in Haiti at any time? Because I know Wyclef Jean was there.

  13. xxxxxxxxxxxxxx says:

    Nathaniel: REV WRIGHT?? is that YOU nigga?? lol what’s next..

  14. Nathaniel says:

    @truth

    no white people cut my check. i’m not racist, either. i’m a nationalist. that doesn’t make me racist, it makes me wise. white people don’t need my hoorah’s, nor my support. but i’ll tell you who does, my people. and also, my dude… you didn’t say anything relevant in that lil paragraph u typed up.

    @xxxxxxxxxxx

    nah nigga check my part and my comb over. it’s farrakhan byatches, hahahaha

  15. Nathaniel says:

    @freakshow

    THANK YOU, yo. a white man runs in when disaster strikes and y’all niggas get all choked up at the thought of race synthesis. i don’t think penn’s intentions are ill… but he ain’t, nor is his program, what haiti needs long term. y’all need to learn to look deeper into a situation than just calling a nigga racist because he loves his people. the white world ain’t never gave a fuck about us. matter of fact they got their foots on our throats. what’s that called? the most we’ve ever done is try to lift our people up. that ain’t racist, that’s called intelligence.

  16. blakep267 says:

    well today @ 6PM pras and sean penn will discuss their views on the situation. the main thing that sticks out to me is that wyclef has never held public office before and we really dont know much about his politics. voting for someone blindly is a very stupid thing to do. Does he really have the answer for Haiti’s problems? Who knows. But if people say he hasnt been there for 6 months, that isnt a good sign. No reason a white guy in sean Penn, should be there more than someone running for president,

  17. JERZZZ says:

    Are you niggas retarded? Honestly im asking. Im a permanent resident of this country, Born and raised, Does that make me qualified to run for President? FUCK NO, Just Like Wyclef. Absolutely im passionate about my country, but does that mean Im gonna make a Good President? FUCK NO. Do I have good ideas that if implemented could make the country run smoother as far as job creation, and economic stability, Sure i think i do. Will they work,FUCK NO>>>>> So in conclusion, What Clef is trying to do for his country is a good thing, but is he Qualified or capable of running an entire country? FUCK NO, the man cant even pay his taxes.

  18. ironic says:

    @nathaniel – i agree with a lot of what you’ve said ito imperialism, solution lies with ties with the global south, even your criticism of penn’s critique of clef…however, if capitalism is the glue that bind those ties, i guarantee you black-black relationships won’t mean shit in rebuilding haiti..while i value your historical perspective ito colonial and imperialist relations based on ‘race’. i am of the opinion that many capitalist ‘brothers’ will fuck us as hard as the white man..in many cases, they do it while making so-called anti-colonial/imperialist statements…talking left/walking right kinda thing

  19. Nathaniel says:

    ^@ironic

    nothing but the truth. i can’t add shit. what you say is spot-on. i do believe emphatically in relying on the diaspora. but capitalism is the seed word for the greed that grew the american tree of racism. the root of imperialism. they go hand in hand, it seems, don’t they? smh… but yeah man, you’re right.

  20. NickeyBlack is done hating on anybody says:

    NO LONG COMMENT FROM ME BUT DO YOU CLEF…IM PROUD TO BE HATIAN, MAKE A DIFFERENCE MY BROTHA

  21. […] might just want to pick up the phone and meet, so he fully understands the man.” (spotted: RR) Share & […]

  22. xxxxxxxxxxxxxx says:

    if WYCLEF wanna make a difference.. then CUT THOSE NIGGAS IN HAITI A CHECK from that CORRUPT ass charity you running..

    i like what a nigga said.. we don’t call him WYCLEF.. we call him WYTHEIF.. lol..

    nigga ain’t gonna do nothing for haiti but rob them niggas blind..

  23. xxxxxxxxxxxxxx says:

    wait.. did a nigga say that PRAS is gonna be on CNN defending CLEF?? oh hell naw.. I never thought CNN and PRAS would ever collide in the same sentence together.. wow. this shit is a circus.. if HAITI vote for him.. they gonna lose the little bit of respect if any that the WORLD has for them.

    and he will hurt the RECOVERY of the country because other nations are not giving WYCLEF money.. GURANTEE you that. They will cut aid because they don’t respect HIM and even more so.. NO ONE CAN TRUST HIM finanically DUE TO HIS PERSONAL FINANCES..

    think about it niggas.

  24. eagles says:

    @Nathaniel
    How does Penn’s opinion not count when he visited and helped Haiti and even set up his own fund?. He’s saying he didn’t see Wycleff helping in the 6 months that he was. Child please, sit the fuck down and shut up..

  25. ironic says:

    @ nathaniel – yeah, they (usually) go hand in hand and i do agree that the exploitative and exclusionary aspects of racism are rooted in capitalism – no doubt. however, given the development of capitalism (not only) in so-called post-colonial settings, things are more complex..i feel ya on giving the diaspora first dibs, as long as that decision/relationship/movement is grounded in the ideological (and about strategy) and not based on some mythological genetic/nature type shit…

    would be interesting to see whether clef’s that dude..his track record, though..hhmm..

  26. ironic says:

    @ eagles – no disrespect, but let’s not start giving penn that john mayer complex where they feel they can say any shit they like, cause they’re ‘seen’… it is for haitians to decide… that white entitlement shit needs to be nipped in the bud…i give penn his props for doing whatever he does, but when white men, especially, feel so confident to speak ‘for’ or ‘on behalf of’ others, then i say stfu to them..this is not even about whether penn is right or wrong, but he has to be sensitive to north/south, black/white, rich/poor dynamics and how that is dealt with..

  27. killacrack says:

    Listen Sean penn is one person i dont even like but honestly look how Cleff looks,running on tv talking about WYCLEFF will make haiti better,This nigga talking in the 3rd person like he is some god.Sean penn is telling the truth this fool said he didnt even want to run for Presidency,No one has seen him there in the last six months but the youth have pushed him into doing so! Look who ever is in charge of Haiti will be in charge of Billions of dollars from disaster relief funding.HMM This fool has had missing money from his foundation and a 2mil dept to the US. HonESTLY WOULD YOU TRUST HIM TO MANAGE BILLIONS FOR THE COUNTRY OF HAITI. He REMINDS ME OF THOSE CHURCH PREACHERS DRIVING AROUND IN ESCALADES WHILE THE CHURCH IS FALLING APART.

  28. Niggapls says:

    @ironic sensitive my ass NIGGA FCK YOU & Wyclef!!

    Always defending the black man no matter what. Black folk to busy giving a funny nigga props to say anything just cause he’s black and Haitian. Sean Penn had the nuts to say something, fck being sensitive yall too sensitive. I would give Clef props if he had the knowledge. Being black don’t make you qualified. There are a few corrupt black presidents in Africa – what’s good with that though ? At the end of the day these are human beings; men, women and children. You ain’t gotta be black to see that they are suffering, you ain’t gotta be black to help out. Sean Penn being white has nothing to with the situation in Haiti, he didn’t cause the earthquake so cool it. Peace

  29. DGtheEnigma says:

    While some are jumping on Penn’s comments, doesn’t it say something the fact that Penn has been in Haiti the past six months, while it’s native son and potential Presidential candidate hasn’t been there in six months?

    Race truly doesn’t matter in this. Time on the ground in Haiti does.

  30. ironic says:

    @ niggapls – thanks for taking time out to read my response (even if you were selective in that reading). before we get into some ping pong posting bs, i suggest you read my responses again and again, then repost your commentary on what you thought i said…how did i give clef a pass? when did i make any statement that race is the ONLY or most important thing here?

  31. Blakep267 says:

    @ XXXXXX no, pras and sean penn both want the person opposing wyclef to become president. they will say, why they dont support wyclef

  32. Nathaniel says:

    @eagles

    is sean penn going to be in a tent in haiti for the next 5 yrs? no. whatever he’s seen in the last 6 months, he wasn’t there until the disaster struck, and he wont be there for the rest of his life. so yes, he should shut his mouth. he’s just a charity thirsty white man who really doesn’t know shit about haiti or the people. and guess what, he can’t even speak the native tongue. what does he know?

    @killacrack

    you seem to be operating under the impression that wyclef would have the entire fate of haiti resting on his ability to balance a check book.

    @ironic

    yeah i can’t speak for his track record. i just urge us to not blot him out so quickly. plus i want to see the alternatives too. who else is running?

  33. Nathaniel says:

    and y’all are delusional if you THINK because wyclef is black niggas is supporting him no matter what. THINK. this isn’t america… any person running for pres of haiti will be haitian. the barack obama “just cuz he’s black” formula doesn’t work in this case.

    i’m just urging sean penn to keep his mouth shut. the fact that he thinks he can speak for haiti because he’s been tenting it out for 6months is preposterous. cloaked arrogance he doesn’t even know he has.

  34. freakshow says:

    Nathaniel

    ^

    Amen.
