Fun budget-friendly family recipes by Anne

I've been thinking about what to post next here, but my mind isn't exactly on food right now. I could probably pull together some type of 'fluff', but blogs are supposed to have a personal edge--agreed? Since adversity is part of being a family, I'm going to share what is going on in my life at the moment before getting back to food-as-usual.
On this past Thursday, my husband, who is an ironworker, fell 26 feet from the roof of the building he was working on. He has sustained multiple severe traumas including broken hips, pelvis and a compound fracture to his right wrist. He was airlifted to a hospital in Philadelphia, which is 1 1/2 to 2 hours from here, and he's currently in the Surgical Trauma ICU. He's had surgery on the wrist, and will need more--the orthopedic doctor said it's one of the worst injuries she's ever seen--on a scale of 1 to 10, it's a 15.
Marty has developed a fever and his oxygen saturation will not rise above 90. The doctors have thoughts on these issues, but nothing concrete yet. They won't be able to operate on his pelvis until he is stable, and that could be several days.
I've seen him twice now, but he is so heavily sedated, and on a ventilator, that he doesn't know that I'm there.
The kids are OK, but have their moments. They are not allowed to see him and can't talk to him, and that's been very hard. My son, Declan, will be 8 on the 11th, and daddy will most certainly not be home for that. Needless to say, he is very sad about this. In the midst of all this, I have that birthday coming up, four kids to outfit for school and a daughter to get to college. I'm not sure how it will all come together, I just know that it will.
The kids and I talk about everything daily, sharing lots of hugs and lots of tears. The future is wildly uncertain at the moment, sort of like all things in life, but we're holding our own, praying a lot and hoping for the best--one day at a time.
