I'm trying to hardsub an Xvid .avi file with TMPGenc Xpress 4 and VobSub, but TMPGenc Xpress 4 cannot open the file. The avi and the sub file have the same name. There's no error message or freeze, the program just cannot open the file. The little green arrow of VobSub opens in the corner of the screen.

But if I try to open the avi without the subs (i.e. the two files don't have the same name), TMPGenc loads the file ok (of course, no little green arrow in taskbar and no subs in video). I have VobSub 2.23 and VS filter.

I tried to reinstall DivX, but no luck. I also tried with Xvid, to no avail.

Can anybody give me an idea ? The funny thing is the problem has appeared only recently, all of a sudden. In the past I hardsubbed other videos with the same method and everything was ok.

When I try to play back the avi and the subs, PowerDVD 7 will play the video and the subs ok, but Windows Media Player 10 will not. It opens the file and the time bar shows progress, but there's no image, nor sound (and the green arrow of VobSub is on). The same happens with Subtitle Workshop. On the other hand, if I open the .avi without the subs (.avi and .srt do not have the same name), everything's ok.

I suppose my problem is related to VobSub. I also tied to reinstall VobSub but no result. Can any body help me with an idea ?

P.S. I hope you guys won't find this message too long. Thx in advance.

TMPGEnc's dshow input can be dodgy. Try VobSub via AVISynth instead and frameserve to TMPGEnc. Should also result in faster encoding, especially if you also resize, etc. in AVISynth.

  4. Tmpgenc Xpress 4

    1. Go into: Options - Preferences - File input plug-in

    2. Uncheck DivX file reader and AVI file reader

    3. Apply the settings, and it should use Media player reader plug-in instead and VobSub will
show up in your task bar and be working as normal.
