Sahar Journalists’ Assistance Fund  
   

IWPR is establishing a fund, in honour of Sahar al-Haideri, to support journalist participants in its training and reporting programmes around the world.

The Sahar Journalists’ Assistance Fund, a designated fund under the authority of IWPR’s Board of Trustees, will be used to support local journalists in cases of exile or disability, or to assist their families in case of death in service.

“The noose is tightening around the Afghan capital and it is no longer possible to ignore the signs,” Jean Mackenzie, IWPR Afghanistan country director, told the Independent.
IWPR Iraq country director Hiwa Osman speaks to the BBC about plans to expand journalism training in Baghdad.
“We urgently need to train journalists [in Iraq] to give the full picture - away from political, religious or sectarian bias," said Hiwa Osman, Iraq country director.
“Many (Afghans) make the pragmatic decision to support the insurgents, since they cannot rely on protection from NATO," says Afghanistan country director Jean Mackenzie.
"The scale and plight of evacuees and refugees [in southern Mindanao] is every bit as bad as Georgia - but nobody is much paying attention," IWPR’s Philippines project director Alan Davis told the BBC.
