Join us bi-weekly for the Cavern Dialogues!
Every other week we will gather in the DRC 6 Neighborhood Auditorium for Cavern Dialogue Sessions
1st Session
Friday, 21 September 2007
Location: DRC6 Neighborhood, Auditorium.
Times: 10am and 10pm Cavern Time (US MDT, GMT-6)
These sessions will be based on the process originally described by quantum physicist David Baum. In this process ideas of debate, discussion and 'convincing others' are thrown out in favor of each person being able to speak with the whole attention of the group:
1. The group agrees that no group-level decisions will be made in the conversation.
"...In the dialogue group we are not going to decide what to do about anything. This is crucial. Otherwise we are not free. We must have an empty space where we are not obliged to anything, nor to come to any conclusions, nor to say anything or not say anything. It's open and free" (Bohm, "On Dialogue", p.18-19.)"
2. Each individual agrees suspend judgement in the conversation.
Specifically, if the individual hears an idea he doesn't like, he does not attack that idea.
"...people in any group will bring to it assumptions, and as the group continues meeting, those assumptions will come up. What is called for is to suspend those assumptions, so that you neither carry them out nor suppress them. You don't believe them, nor do you disbelieve them; you don't judge them as good or bad...(Bohm, "On Dialogue", p. 22.)"
3. As these individuals "suspend judgement" they also simultaneously are as honest and transparent as possible.
Specifically, if the individual has a "good idea" that he might otherwise hold back from the group because it is too controversial, he will share that idea in this conversation.
4. Individuals in the conversation try to build on other individuals ideas in the conversation.
The group often comes up with ideas that are far beyond what any of the individuals thought possible before the conversation began.
Based on these principles, the Dialogue sessions will have the following ground rules:
> The topic for each session will be chosen by group consensus before the start of the dialogue.
> Because joining in a circle is difficult, a facilitator will spend the first 5 minutes of the session adding names to a queue, and will call on each person on the queue to speak. No one is required to be on the queue, and you can request (by PM) to be added to or removed from the queue at any time. Hoever each person may only speak once.
> Although we can not police it in any way, we ask that PM conversation be kept to a minimum. If you are carrying on outside conversations, you can not be listening fully to the person speaking, and not fully participating in the dialogue.
> Please, no voice chat. Not everyone is able to use it.
> There is no Q&A, commentary or debate and discussion in these sessions. There should be no comments while each person is speaking, nor discussion or comments about what they said after they are done. Each person speaks, and each person listens.
> As such, any discussion, commentary or questions should be held until after the session, and after you have left the neighborhood.
> Each session will begin and end with a brief quiet period (accomplished by everyone going /afk) in order to bring ourselves fully to the space, and then to fully recognize that we are finished.
> Each person who wishes will be given the time to speak, with the facilitator maintaining awareness of the time, and the number of people left to speak.
> Sessions are neither IC or OOC. Both points of view are welcome, and anyone can speak from whichever perspective they choose.
> Everyone is welcome. Every Explorer, every Cyantist, every DRC member, everyone. All will be treated equally, and be expected to follow the same rules.
