About the author

Carolyn Humphries was born and brought up in Somerset. Her grandmother was a professional cook and taught her all her skills. She produced her first Sunday lunch at the age of eight or nine! She always aspired to become a cookery editor and writer and, after training as a journalist, then working as a chef, she became a cookery writer and then Deputy Cookery Editor on Woman magazine in the mid 1970s. Since then she has written for numerous magazines, been a consultant on many books and is the author of over 60 of her own - mostly cookery and health-related ones but also a selection of other non-fiction works including Really Simple English Grammar (recommended by John Clare in the Daily Telegraph) and Paint Your Life a Brighter Shade of Green (she feels really strongly about the environment). With a passion for good food, she cares deeply about what we eat and where it comes from. She is dedicated to promoting healthy eating, encouraging everyone to buy local produce, when possible, and also supports ethical farming and Fairtrade. She is a co-ordinator and judge for the Great Taste Awards. Her website is www.carolynhumphries.co.uk.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 November 2014Wow- this little book is FANTASTIC!! I've been very interested in buying a calorie book for years. I checked out absolutely loads of them on Amazon and finally settled on this one as it had the best reviews, and it really is 'pocket' sized. It's so small, that I can easily carry it around in a small handbag along with my tiny diary (and other handbag contents) without it taking up too much space. It measures just under 5 ins vertically by just under 4ins across.
I don't know how many pages it has, as they aren't numbered, but the type size is very small and there are a lot of pages. All the foods are listed alphabetically, and for some reason you have to turn the book to the side to read the pages as they are printed so that the words read 'upwards'- if you know what I mean. This however, is not an issue whatsoever.
The book is absolutely fab, and although I'm vegetarian and don't need to know calorie contents of anything dead, it still has a very extensive list of foods to check. It's already helped me to lose 5lbs! (I had a jacket potato with loads of salad stuff, cheese and beans and little did I know that it came to over 900 cals!!! I was shocked!)
So, if you want to lose weight by counting your calories, BUY this book, and it will be your bible!!! It's amazing. I love it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 September 2012This is a brilliant little book! It contains all the main "everyday" foods and has space for you to add ones of your own which is helpful. The section at the front clearly sets out the portion sizes referred to making it really easy to work everything out. I also found the bit on Calories and Exercise really helpful, it not only gives details of the calories burned in some common exercises like jogging and aerobics but also every day activities like walking and housework. This is going to be an extremely helpful little tool in my campaign to stay in shape and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who's trying to lose weight or who just wants to keep track of their calorie intake. Very happy with my purchase!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 September 2012Although other reviewers mentioned that this book did not give the calories per weight of the food, I thought I'd give it a try anyway as others had said that the portion sizes are described at the beginning of the book.......they are, but it still doesn't help. I am particularly interested in knowing the exact calories in fruit and vegetables as I am sticking to a 500 calorie per day diet for two days a week. As you can see, I don't have a lot of room for error and one person's idea of a "large carrot" is another's medium. Tomato is another example. The portion size of tomato is given as "1 fruit". Hmmm, cherry or beef? Cucumber is portioned as "5 slices". Well, what if my slices are 2.5mm thick and my neighbour's are 5mm thick, that's doubled the amount of calories my neighbour has eaten. You get the picture. This book also lists lots of well-known, branded foods that come in packets. I can't see the point of this as the calorie breakdown will also be printed on the packet the item comes in, including the calories per 100g.
If you are looking for a rough calorie guide when eating out, then this will slip very neatly into a pocket or bag and will probably contain a lot of the dishes you may eat.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 September 2012An excellent little book packed full of easy to follow calorie counting contained in Carolyn Humphries pocket Calorie Counter. If, like me you are new to this form of dietary control, the information is easy to follow, and listed in alphabetical order of product names. The book identifies not only the calorific content but also portion size , carbs , fibre and fat. There are loads of ideas and information on weight conrtol.
A really handy little book to carry anywhere - although counting calories does get a bit addictive. So enjoy an odd treat as well, this little book allows for this and will get you back on track.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 February 2017This book is excellent especially for those people who dont want to spend hours trawling through pages and pages of information about various brands or items.
It is basic, handy size, and gives sensible calorie counts on virtually any food.
Very sensible advice and info on how to lose weight, what weight you should aim for and how many calories needed.
I have had this book for quite a while but just started using it regularly every day.
I have already lost 5 pounds.
I have tried lots of calorie books but this is my favourite its simply great.
Nice size to keep in your handbag.
My only negative about it is that some of the pages fall out after a while.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 February 2011Some people are always going to want more information than that contained in this little book. Some people are always going to find the presentation not necessarily to their liking or taste. The range of specific dietary enquiry is infinite and it is consequently impossible in any generic dietician product to cover everything.
But I found this book to be very helpful and a good enough stab in most cases to be able to work out from the information that is contained what you may need to know even if the specific form of any item is not directly covered. I found it accessible, logically laid out, quick to use, aswell as having the considerable advantage of portability.
Just the job.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 September 2012This is a wonderful little book for anyone trying to lose weight, it tells you the calorie content of every kind of food, there is a section to tell you how many calories there are in the portions mentioned so you don't have to keep weighing food, it tells you the fat/carb/fibre content too, there is even a section to tell you how many calories you burn in 30minutes doing various physical activities. It is small enough to fit in your handbag so you can take it everywhere with you. Do you get the impression I love this little book? I DO I DO I DO !!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Book fell apart twice with pages coming loose.
The book has a fine thread that holds the spine.
It fell apart with the pages falling out.
I was sent a second book and I was very careful not to open it too far. It was difficult to read as it just opens a tiny bit.
Well it is in pieces again, as the thin thread that holds the pages is not strong.i was careful with it and did the best not to open it too far.
I will say that it is comprehensivewith a lot of information, but poor quality in my eyes.
Please strengthen the thread, or find another way in which to bind this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best for your Health.
I am diabetic and I am obese. While trying to gain control of my health issues, I found I needed a book to help me keep track of my calories, carbs, protein and fat. This book does it for me. I take it with me when we are on long trips. It is my constant companion. Since I have bought this book and with its help guiding me I have lost 40 lbs. in 4 months. That is the most and the fastest I have ever lost weight.

5.0 out of 5 stars Formulates portion sizes and calories
The book is simple to use to help to formulate meals. It counts portion sizes instead of individual calories. Great little book!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
This book is not what I expected. It is mostly foods in the UK. I actually never even look at it since I don't eat Bangers and Mash and things like that. It was a waste of my money.

4.0 out of 5 stars A tool sent to help my sis with her diabetes.
This tool makes it easier for her to help herself. Living in a small town, there is no local bookstore that she can consult.
