Adorable Crochet For Babies and Toddlers: Over 20 projects to make for babies from birth to two years old Paperback – 21 Mar. 2005

4.5 out of 5 stars 39 ratings

Crochet offers great scope for creativity because, with only a hook and a ball of yarn, any kind of fabric can be constructed, from thick and heavy to fine and lacy. 'Adorable Crochet for Babies and Toddlers' is full of designs for appealing garments that are soft, comfortable, and very stylish. All the designs are given with variations of stitch, trim or detail alongside. The patterns also include colourful toys, ranging from the simple to the more ambitious. Traditional blankets and throws are given a new spin and they will become items to cherish, long after the baby has grown. The crochet techniques featured include a wide variety of afghan squares, marvellous textured relief stitches that look like ribs and cables, bobble patterns, lacy edgings, multi-colour stitches, and some Irish crochet. All the designs are based on the combination of a few simple stitches, which are illustrated in detail at the start of the book for beginners, or as a reminder to anyone whose skills are rusty. Instructions are given both as stitch-by-stitch explanations and as charts, using international symbols. This allows the reader to choose their preferred method of explanation, or to cross refer for checking purposes.

great little book with simple and more complex patterns to crochet for your baby..toys, clothes, shoes and blankets included, nicely arranged in 'colour co-ordinated' sections. i particularly like the 'tips' on how to alter the pattern to make it different, the smocked top on the front is gorgeous. the book itself is in excellent condition despite being seconhand.

I am very pleased with this book. I have crocheted two sets of the lovely Icelandic jacket and beret. They have turned out beautifully and look exactly like the pictures in the book. I have started the Axtec jacket on the front cover but might not finish it as all the end that require weaving in may not look too good on the inside of the garment. It seems strange that the crochet terms are American but the wool used is English! The author does state that English wool is now available in the US but it still seems a bit odd!! There are other garments that I will make in the book. It is good that all the American stitches are shown and the diagrams are good. Because I crochet quite a lot I am used to the different terms but quite often I have to stop and think and remind myself which country my instructions are from!!! It can get a bit irritating, not just with this book but with all patterns!!

A lovely collection of clothes toys accessories and blankets, great instructions including charts, in English notation.

A good baby crochet pattern book that covers a wide range of items BUT not all that easy. Some patterns are complicated to follow because of the shaping but that does away with the shapeless crochet usually found in books. Although complicated the bar shoes turn out fantastically and look great on little feet! My friends love this book and I am constantly asked to make things for their little ones from it! Most patters suggest Rowan yarn but work well with other yarns.

There are more than 22 projects in the book - of these 2 are very 1980's, others would benefit from a change of colour, but most are up to date. The patterns include: 5 hats, 1 dress, 5 blankets, 4 cardies/jackets, 2 socks/booties, 1 shoes, 1 sandals, hot water bottle cover, scarf, bag, heart sachet, gorgeous teddy and rabbit patterns, building blocks, and a tomato ball (I put a kinder egg capsule filled with beads inside to make it rattle). There are also a few pages on basic crochet instructions for the beginner.

If you're an American crocheter, you must change the directions to American terms or learn the English ones used here. First 19 pages are crochet instructions for beginners which also explains the English terms. This is followed by 22 projects of all sorts. No schematics but some international symbols are used which is fine. As others have written, the projects are really cute. All the yarns are described as chunky or dk or whatever so it is easy enough to substitute. Lots of baby blankets, accessories and a rabbit and a really good looking bear. The sweaters are nicely done and some are quite unusual such as the Icelandic and Mexican jackets. Book is large paperback with good print and cute pictures.

I have made many of the projects many times with fabulous results. They always turn out looking professionally made. The directions are fairly easy to follow with the exception of the smock pictured here. I found that rather difficult, but once it was completed, it was gorgeous! I have also made multiples of the sweaters, ballet shoes and sandals as well as the Incan hat. All of them were greatly appreciated and looked "adorable"!

What I love most about this book is the contemporary styles so beautifully photographed, I have searched on line for a long time and all I could find were the "granny" style projects that young mothers would consider tacky. These projects are practical and trendy and inspire me to do do them. The book has a glossary that defines the terms that I didn't understand since the terminology is a bit different. Beautiful book!

    Something NEW and wonderful!

Perhaps the British conversion would be too much to be understood easily... But this is the first crochet book for babies that does anything different in all ways from other stuff out there.

The yarn choices are important::: that "department store" sheen comes from the quality yarns used. (Lots of cotton and cotton blends, which goes with the newer trends for baby, as cotton is hypo-allergenic, and most babies wear it well.)

It's just a beatiful book with thoughtful patterns.
