Communion With God: Fellowship with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit (John Owen Series) Paperback – September 20, 2012
Purchase options and add-ons
In 1657, John Owen produced one of his finest devotional treatises: probably originating from the substance of a series of sermons.
He examines the Christian’s communion with God as it relates to all three members of the trinity. He assures that every Christian does have communion with God, no–one is excluded and that this communion takes place distinctly with Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Our relationship with…
God the Father is primarily through love and faith.
God the Son is through fellowship & grace.
God the Holy Spirit is primarily through comfort and sanctification.
This was a controversial work in ecclesiastical circles of the 17th century. Twenty years after its publication, the rational ecclesiastical elite were scoffing at it’s contents. Owen strongly defended the ideas within this book, and history has shown him to be right! It is a classic of Christian devotional thought that still influences the church today. This is the original text with a new layout and is fully subtitled which makes it more accessible to a new generation of readers.

Review
"I owe an incalculable debt to these pages. For forty years now this has been a favourite volume to which I continue to return for more 'angel food'"
-- Sinclair B. Ferguson"Owen was by common consent the weightiest Puritan theologian, and many would bracket him with Jonathan Edwards as one of the greatest Reformed theologians of all time."
-- J. I. PackerIt made beautifully clear … that God is love. Owen, with skillful scriptural exegesis and warmest pastoral insight takes us to the very heart of Christianity in this treatise, and shows us that … this alone makes sense of everything else, and irradiates every step of earthly life with strength, hope and joy. We owe a debt of gratitude of Philip Ross for beautifully editing this long discourse, and making it far more accessible to another generation. All through, he has remained eminently faithful to the original meaning. The beauty of John Owen’s theology, and most of all, the beauty of the love of God in Christ to us needy souls shines through. I shall be enthusiastically recommending this new volume to my classes

About the author

John Owen (1616–1683) was vice chancellor of Oxford University and served as advisor and chaplain to Oliver Cromwell. Among the most learned and active of the Puritans in seventeenth-century Europe, and known as the "theologian's theologian," he was accomplished both in doctrine and practical theology.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2021I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to understand more of the love of God for us. I've highlighted so many sections of this and review them daily.
Here's a couple of my "highlights":
In vain should we apply our natural abilities to remember, call to mind, consider, the promises of Christ; without success would it be,—it is so daily: but when the Comforter doth undertake the work, it is done to the purpose.
We see it by daily experience, that very many have little taste and sweetness and relish in their souls of those truths which yet they savingly know and believe; but when we are taught by this unction, oh, how sweet is every thing we know of God!
Be aware though, the language is hard to get through, but keep pressing on with the Lord's help and you'll find rich treasures in it.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2019This is Owen at his very best. I love this work because not only does he show how each member of the trinity is different but he shows how they relate to us and even how they relate to one another! Call for someone wanting to dig deeper into the subject of the Trinity this is a must have. You will also see parts of Owen that you would recognize from other works. Most assuredly there are traces of mortification of sin and the death of death. Works like this show why the Puritans composed works that are far superior to any of today
- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2014Can't say enough about America's greatest theologian. Great read and very insightful. If your desire is to have a true, correct and deep understanding of God's word and purpose, then you should put the Works of John Owen at the top of your reading list.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2016Besides the bible, this book has made the biggest difference in my life. Well, I should say the first four chapters have. I can't get past the truths in the first four chapters. I so easily wrestle with the truth of God's inexhaustible love toward his children. I just have to keep coming back. And I have had this book for nine months! This book is in a series called Puritan Paperbacks which makes it easier to read, and it is. It is not the language that keeps me unable to get past chapter four; it is it's beauty in expressing the love of God toward his people and his longing to have communion with them. The inability to grasp these truths keeps us alienated from God. We run away and hide our faces because we believe He is harsh and unkind. What a bad wrap the Puritans get. They are often thought of as preachers of a strict code of unattainable standards. I think they were able to live holier lives because they had such a sweet communion with God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. I still have so much to learn. If you are considering buying this book, you won't regret it-just don't expect to fly through it. It needs plenty of time to be digested and meditated on.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2020Great book. A 5 in and of itself. Footnotes well done. But for some reason someone appended the entire text of the King James Bible. The result is a book that loads as slow as molasses. Not sure why the entire bible text was included since the texts of bible references were already included. I don't mind having the entire text of the King James. I just would prefer to have it in a separate book.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2015This book is absolutely wonderful. It is practical and encouraging. It has been instrumental in the spiritual development of several of my favorite people. When I feel myself drifting, I pull this out and read it and the scripture that it illuminates, and God uses it to draw me back to Himself. It is perhaps my favorite book of all time.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2019The author's heart and passion is felt on every page. His devotion to the truth of God's word is conspicuously apparent. Instructive, and deeply spiritual.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2016Great book! It is an older book so it uses words that are hard to understand. If you can get by that, it has a huge amount of knowledge though!
Thank you very much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Owen is excellent in all his words on any topic. Communion with God is another outstanding volume, comparatively easy to grasp .... Not like his Pnematologia. Every library should have Owen's writings.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really well done edition of a great classic
this is an excellently presented edition of a great classic. The updating of the text has been done very carefully, so that one gets the real flavour of Owen without the very difficult sentence construction. There are small side panels to explain obscure words. The publishers deserve all credit for the presentation. The real value is in the book itself, of course. If you have thought of Owen as a rather dry and dusty Puritan theologian, here is the place to see his brilliance combined with a deep love of the Lord Jesus Christ. A book of pure pleasure that ought to be much more widely known.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for a sinner
Great read especially if you’re on the way to hell as most unrepentant sinners are.

3.0 out of 5 stars Should have left the words of John Owens alone
Content was quite good, however, as has been done with the King James bible over the decades, this book has been edited from the original. I realize the reasoning is that it is easier to read with all the amendments. But so they say about the KJV too, which is a shallow argument. Have you tried reading The Message bible? And it is a contemporary version of the bible. I think they should have left the content alone, or provided a glossary of terms and how they convert into modern English. As I said, the book was good, but it would have been nice to actually read what John Owens wrote. Instead of someone else's interpretation of his words.
