Eureka

Eureka

“Holdin’ On” sounds like a California classic that should be broadcast from an 8-Track player blaring from a customized van. Thirty-five years past that moment in time, the possibilities of the era come charging from Rooney’s 2010 release, Eureka. “I Can’t Get Enough” is an AM radio classic from the days when AM radio stations played music. “Only Friend” pumps up the Fender Rhodes. “Into the Blue” is the song meant for ‘70s soft-rock stations. Yet, for all their love of retro-styles, Rooney play with an urgency and power that was incorporated by the punk and new wave bands that followed. The guitar crunch of “All or Nothing” uses Cheap Trick, Elvis Costello and countless skinny-tie bands to make its point. The additional bonus cuts on the “deluxe” edition include the full-powered attack of “Pity” and the reggae-tinged “Can’t Put Your Heart Around Everyone.” And the acoustic tunes, “I Don’t Wanna Lose You” and “Go On,” where the band proves it can even pull it off with little more than the purity of their earnest vocals.
