It's very sensitive and good at picking up noises and leaks. However, cheap headphones does not filter out surrounding noise. If you have the car engine on, you'll pick up whatever you point at, AND the engine noise AT THE SAME TIME. Therefore, sometimes you'll be overwhelmed. I find it helpful to put on another set of headphones over it.

I have been using it for a little while now. I have found it VERY sensitive to most sounds, but seemingly not to the ones that I really need it to be. Yes that sounds really strange. I tried listening to the car A/C hoses with the AC running but cannot hear the refrigerant pulsing. I tried it on a tire valve and found a leak which I then corrected, but from the sound of it it was really leaking a great deal. And that means I could have found the leak if I put my ear next to the valve anyways.

I can hear people's conversation from next door, but I cannot hear fuel injectors well enough to make a proper diagnosis. I hear too much engine running noise, so its really difficult to filter out. Also, it is sensitive to the distributor EMF field and makes a horrible buzz when near it. So you have to watch out for that. Yes I bought it for diagnosing CARS. It amplifies too much external sounds which make it not so great. It is non-the-less very powerful. The build quality is on the flimsy side. If you drop it, i bet it may shatter into a million pieces. It it very lightweight, and the detachable headphones are also really el cheapo. It has a volume control which is invaluable. It could use a proper guide on how to get the most from it. While it does give tips on what it can be used for, I disagree that it would really be practical for those it mentioned. The funny thing about it, is that I cannot hear my own heartbeat(safely), but I can hear cars from over 200ft away driving past my house and normal conversations next door. I say it is worth buying, but only if you know what it can be used for practically.

Something that might be obvious to someone more gadget savvy but still worth mentioning, given the name: This thing DOESN'T AMPLIFY HEART SOUNDS. Though it does pick up respiration. Definitely, as described, more geared to mechanical sounds.
