Roman's footprint unearthed in Israel

Published: Thursday, August 16 2007TEL AVIV, Israel - Israeli archeologists have discovered a footprint possibly made by the sandal of a Roman legionnaire in the ruins of the ancient town of Sussita, in northern Israel, the Haaretz newspaper said Wednesday.
The hobnailed sandal might have belonged either to someone involved in building works or a Roman soldier, the scientists from Haifa University said.
Sussita, located on the eastern side of Lake Kinneret, was founded at the time of the Seleucid Kings, and survived the Roman and Byzantine periods, as well as the Arab conquest in the 7th century. It was destroyed in 749 AD by a major earthquake and abandoned.
The scientists said that fact helped preserve its unique treasures.
