Ohio Exit Polls Show Clinton's Late Attacks Worked

Exit polls from Ohio suggest that Sen. Hillary Clinton's last minute aggressive campaigning against Sen. Barack Obama may have been effective in holding off his possible come-from-behind victory.

Clinton won 55 percent of those voters who made up their minds in the last three days, according to MSNBC's numbers. Traditionally, voters have gone to Obama's camp as the election approaches, either because of his momentum or because of his increasing name-recognition. (Voters who make their minds up on the very last day, however, have usually supported Clinton).

Clinton's attacks on Obama's position on NAFTA may also have had their desired effect. Union households in Ohio supported Clinton by a margin of 54 percent to 45 percent. In addition, 58 percent of voters whose family incomes were between $15,000 and $30,000 supported Clinton compared to Obama's 41 percent. Finally, those worried about their financial situation supported Clinton 52 percent to 47 percent.

Not all of the New York Democrat's attacks proved effective, according to the exit polls. Clinton's argument that her experience will help her produce change (more so than Obama) seemingly fell on deaf ears. Seventy-three percent of those Ohioans who valued a candidate's ability to affect change the most supported Obama.

And, as ABC News reported:

The ability to "bring needed change" beats "experience" as the most important quality in a candidate by about a 20-point margin in Ohio and by about 15 points in Texas, according to preliminary exit poll results.

Other highlights from the exit poll data include:

-- Republicans and independents again flocked to Obama but by margins that did not exceed 10 percent.

-- Fifty-three percent of Ohio voters thought Obama was the strongest of the Democratic candidates to beat John McCain.

-- Clinton continued to have a strong lead over Obama among women, 54 percent to 45 percent. Obama bested her among men but by a smaller margin: 52 percent to 47 percent. Women outnumbered men in the Democratic primary, 59-41, making their support for Clinton all the more significant.

Whites flocked to Clinton by a large margin: 61 percent to 38 percent. Clinton carried white men, 54-45, a setback for Obama who had been winning, sometimes by decisive margins, white men in such states as Maryland, Virginia, California and Wisconsin. Blacks, who made up 19 percent of the exit poll, continued to support Obama by huge margin: 89 percent to 11 percent.

It is shameful in this day and age, in this country that there are still people that will not move beyond the race issue. Why is that? It's so embarrassing and inexplicable. I would NEVER vote for a candidate that fuels those fires. Those of us that live, breath and THINK in the 21st century left those old tired notions behind a very long time ago. I guess there really are parts of this country stuck in a time warp.

My point exactly regarding OHIO and TEXAS! It is the elephant in the room. Obama cant change every heart, some things are just in people.

She used Rove, as promised--attacks on experience, misrepresentations of NAFTA, fear-mongering on national security, exploiting racial and religious fears. Just as promised: threw everything negative they could concoct (AND the kitchen sink) at voters and hope that something bad would tilt them away from Obama.

And it worked. Like it always works.

Only when Democrats do it it kind of leaves a bad taste, you know? We're not all duped by the tricks and when you see through them....doesn't make you want to EVER vote "Clinton".

ABT is right. Limbaugh's ploy worked!!! Limbaugh delivered for Hillary!!! 600,000 self-described conservative voters in Texas voted in the democratic primary. Other states since Super Tuesday had those same Republican voters voting Obama 80%! According to exit polls, 54% of those Republicans in Texas voted for Hillary, 43% for Obama. (80-43=36%) Do the math and maybe 200,000+ voters switched for Limbaugh, whom has the largest influence where? In the state of Texas! What was the margin of Clinton voters over Obama? 80,000! And George Bush DANCED A JIG on camera today because of it!!!

How idiotic is all this? Anyone paying the slightest attention to ANY issue must have made up their mind long before entering the voting booth.

But wait! This is why America is headed down the dark road of despair - our citizens truly DON'T pay attention to the details, and we all know the devil is in them. A lazy, complacent, unedumacated citizenry deserves what it gets.

Yes, those attack ads worked. They've convinced me, beyond all doubt, to never ever vote for that miserable, grasping, woman.

Good to see that Ohioans are still a bunch of morons. Perhaps, the fate of our country shouldn't rest in OH's hands this time.

it looks like Rush Limbaugh tilted Ohio and Texas to Clinton.
Here's the evidence (from David Weigel, via Andrew Sullivan's blog).

Go and check the exit polls. In Wisconsin, Republicans made up 9 percent of the Democratic primary vote. Obama won them 72-28 over Clinton. Just as tellingly, 14 percent of primary voters said they were "conservative," and Obama won them 59-40, a bigger margin than he won with liberals or moderates. Tactical voters who said Obama stood a better chance of winning in November? They went for him 87-13.
Now, look at Ohio. Once again 9 percent of voters were Republicans, but Obama and Clinton split them evenly, 49-49. Once again, 14 percent of voters were "conservatives," and Obama and Clinton split them 48-48. (Obama did better with them than he did with liberals and moderates.) Those tactical voters who thought Obama could win gave him a 80-18 victory, a margin twelve points smaller than the margin in Wisconsin.
It's a similar story in Texas, where Limbaugh has the most listeners of any of these states. Obama won the Republican vote 52-47, but conservatives (22 percent of all voters, up from 15 percent in the Kerry-Edwards primary) went against Obama. For the first time since Super Tuesday, they were Clinton's best ideological group: She won them 53-43. And Clinton won 13 percent of the people who said Obama was the most electable candidate.
Ohio didn't wind up being very close, but Clinton won the Texas primary by about 98,000 votes out of 2.8 million cast. If the exits are right, about 252,000 of those voters were Republicans, and about 618,000 were conservatives. Clinton truly might have won the Texas primary on the backs of Rush Limbaugh listeners.

"Clinton's attacks on Obama's position on NAFTA may also have had their desired effect."

That is what makes me seethe inside - that...woman didn't say a damned thing when her husband was setting America up for its transformation into a third-world nation separated into haves and have-nots with his trade policies - but now she's the champion of the working person?

Arrrghhhh...to be Odin...

I could have sworn I just heard Carl Bernstein say that HRC wanted Bill to focus on healthcare rather than Nafta. But he disagreed and was the boss at the time.
As far as the candidate's position on NAFTA today, they're exactly the same, no? And isn't the problem with NAFTA not NAFTA itself, but the fact that the letter "F" should be changed from "Free" to "Fair"?

Both Texas and Ohio allowed crossover votes from Republicans, who had an already-decided race on their hands and their radio talk show heroes encouraging them to vote for Hillary just to keep things messed up.

I havent seen any exit polls on republican crossovers. One poll lumped republicans and independents together and said that Clinton and Obama split them evenly. However Independents usually go for Obama. The polls also showed elderly and whites going strong for Clinton, typically demographics that slant republican in the general election.

Texas--isn't their state symbol a Cross, with a noose around it?

And Ohio--well, if Arkansas is the buckle on the Bible belt, then Ohio is the zipper!

Way to go Hillary. Your new found constituency just lowered the IQ of the Democratic party by fifty points!

I will definitely vote for Mccain if Hillary gets the nomination, a lot of my friends will do the same or just sit this one out... We're not going to reward these type of dirty tactics with our votes.

Why, thank you, I thought so too :) Especially since the zipper seems to be a totem in Hillary's life with Bill.

As to who I'll vote for: Why do the Shillary's always play the Nader card, hmmm? Is he some sort of bogeyman? As I recall, more votes were lost for Kerry in Florida through acts of Republican voter disenfranchisement and actual misplacement of votes than Nader ever got--And, oh yeah, Kerry caved just as he was meant to do all along, instead of demanding his rights. Those Skull and Bones connections seem to carry a lot of weight.

No, I plan on being at the Convention, in the street with about a million other concerned Americans of all political persuasions, making sure that our voice is heard, just as it was in Chicago in 1968. And if Hillary should manage to steal the nomination through back room dealing that undoes the will of the people, Then we will demand that we be included in the process, whatever that takes.

We need Monica Lewinsky back in the White House!

We need someone who can counter McCain's involvement in planning the war with her _own_ vote for the war! Where is John Kerry when you need him?
