Saturday, September 12th Projects

Chemo Comfort (11:00am-1:00pm) (8 Volunteers):
Chemo Comfort provides resources that enable cancer patients to take positive, comforting measures for themselves, thereby empowering patients at a time when so much feels out of their control. Volunteers will prepare kits of products to help cancer patients manage the side effects of treatment. These kits will be shared with treatment organizations throughout the greater NYC area, which means you will have an immediate, positive impact on your community!

City Harvest (8:45am-12:00pm) (10 Volunteers per Market):
City Harvest is the world's first, and the city's only, food rescue organization, working to end hunger across all five boroughs. At our Mobile Markets, volunteers help to distribute fresh produce free of charge in a farmers market setting to eligible residents. Volunteers are stationed at 3-4 market tables, each supplied with thousands of pounds of fresh produce. Volunteers are responsible for weighing and bagging produce, greeting residents and distributing fresh, healthy produce! All volunteers must be 18 or older. You will either volunteer at St. Mary's Mobile Market or Melrose Mobil Market, both in the Bronx.

Citymeals-on-Wheels (9:45am-12:00pm) (20 Volunteers):
Citymeals-on-Wheels provides a continuous lifeline of nutritious food and human company to homebound elderly New Yorkers in need, helping them to live with dignity in their own familiar homes and communities. Volunteers will deliver nutritious meals to our homebound seniors, on foot, within walking distance of the senior center. Rain or shine, the meals must be delivered - so we hope you'll join us to bring a warm meal and a warm smile to our elders!

FPA-Foundation (1:00pm-4:00pm) (15 Volunteers):
The FPA-Foundation advocates, educates, and empowers the community to enhance their voice and leadership in the community on social justice issues. Volunteers will help with community organizing activities, including outreach and the distribution of flyers.

LifeForce in Later Years (10:30am-1:30pm) (10 Volunteers):
As a new addition to the Barnard & Columbia community, wouldn't it be great to connect with the alumnae, professors, and New York City natives that came before you? By volunteering with LifeForce in Later Years (LILY), you'll have a chance to connect with local elders to hear their stories, learn from their experiences, and provide the support & companionship they need. LILY is holding a recruitment event and is in need of volunteers who can be actively engaged in recruiting from the community. Volunteers should feel comfortable speaking one-on-one or to small groups about the LILY mission.

Riverside Park Conservancy (10:00am-1:00pm) (15 Volunteers):
The Riverside Park Conservancy works to restore, maintain, and improve Riverside Park in partnership with the City of New York for the enjoyment and benefit of all New Yorkers. Volunteers will be working in Sakura Park and on Claremont Avenue to clean neglected horticulture beds, do some weeding, and tidy up the area.

St. Mary's Episcopal Church (12:00pm-4:00pm) (8 Volunteers):
St. Mary's Outreach Soup Kitchen, a program of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, is part of the 30+ year old food program which helps to alleviate hunger in our West Harlem neighborhood. Volunteers will work along with St. Mary's staff & staff from the Columbia-sponsored free medical and dental clinic to take lunches to areas where hungry and homeless people gather. We offer food and information about the clinic, clothing, free movies and other services available at St. Mary's.

Transdiaspora Network (11:00am-2:00pm) (2 Volunteers):
Transdiaspora Network (TDN) works to create and communicate culturally oriented solutions to the next generation of leaders fighting HIV/AIDS in local communities. Volunteers will help a TDN intern co-facilitate a focus group for the TDN Fashion Your Health Club. This new community-oriented project will engage low-income background high school girls in a conversation about combining fashion and health to promote self-esteem.

Each year, they hold the NYC Century Bike Tour - the biggest, baddest bike tour in New York City, during which 7000 cyclists take to the streets to ride New York City’s only all-urban century tour. Our Astoria Park volunteers help ensure that our busiest rest stop runs smoothly. They prepare and pass out water and snacks, direct the flow of bike traffic, and cheer riders on as they head out for the last leg of their journey. Whether you’re a cyclist, walker, driver, weight-lifter, or PB&J-maker extraordinaire, we have a job for you.
