Why this petition matters

Started by N A

Please join us in urging city council to thoughtfully plan
El Paso’s growth and vote for the rezoning with a height restriction based on real numbers and data for the proposed 22 story building on Shadow Mountain Drive.

A building of this height will:

  • tower over thousands of houses and apartments
  • cause an inordinate amount of traffic congestion on one of the busiest roads on the west side
  • obliterate views of our impressive mountains and expansive skies (El Paso doesn’t have a river walk, or a lake; we have mountains, beautiful mountains that should be the highlight of our skyline.)
  • reduce house values—views of a high rise outside of downtown don’t sell houses
  • add light pollution and disrupt the dark sky ordinance passed in 2005
  • NOT add tax increases as the builder WILL BE  asking for tax abatements/credits (meaning they won't be paying taxes for at least 10 years, sometimes more)
  • cause safety hazards for the kids who walk to school through this intersection and hinder emergency vehicles getting in and out of the intersection and area streets

To have progress El Paso must build wisely. Luxury apartments and a hotel near the #1 rated ballpark, beautiful San Jacinto Plaza, and the arts district —that's progress. The city has spent millions revamping downtown, bettering the quality of life for El Pasoans and adding value to El Paso. A high rise in a residential neighborhood (a suburb in every other city in the country) will be giant step backward.

GOAL: Lower the height of the building or move the project downtown.
